Rhinebeck Sheep & Wool Festival

Student Project; Branding, Illustration, User Interface Design, Typography & Layout

The New York State Sheep and Wool Festival, colloquially known as Rhinebeck, is a travel destination for knitters around the world. Held once a year in upstate New York, it is renowned for the fresh fall air, the adorable animal contests, the apple cider doughnuts, and the high-quality yarn vendors. It is a place where knitters gather to show off their “Rhinebeck sweaters,” often the latest fashions the knitting world has to offer, made especially for the occasion. For this re-imagining of the Rhinebeck branding, I wanted to capture this excitement by incorporating the colors of early fall and including my own hand-drawn illustrations of sheep in sweaters. I redesigned the website for the festival making it much easier to navigate than the original site, and re-named the festival itself; adopting the colloquial title “Rhinebeck.”

Festival Website

User Interface Design

Despite the festival’s popularity, its website is cluttered in appearance and difficult to navigate, which deters the customer from purchasing tickets online in advance. I simplified the design of the site, and restructured the navigation to make the site feel easier to use.

Business Cards

Illustration, Logo, Typography

The concept for these cards was to have a variety of fall colors to echo the foliage during the time of year when the festival is held. Each festival coordinator might have their own color, with a unique sheep-in-a-sweater on the back.

Posters

The festival is known as a place to see and be seen in your “Rhinebeck Sweater.” A veritable fashion show for handmade items, knitters flock there every year to compare patterns and get ideas. This series captures the spirit of the Rhinebeck sweater fashion show in a playful and enthusiastic manner.
